Nitrogen deficiency
The lawn's gone pale, thin, and slow — cutting less, greening less, and losing ground to weeds. Nine times in ten that's not disease, it's hunger: nitrogen is the nutrient turf burns through fastest, and a hungry lawn is exactly the opening clover and crabgrass wait for.

01Is it actually nitrogen?
Yellow has more than one cause — rule out the impostors first.
Classic nitrogen deficiency is uniform: the whole lawn fades to pale green, then yellow, and simply grows less — thinner blades, less to mow, weak recovery after a cut. The tell is where it starts. Nitrogen is a mobile nutrient, so a starved plant pulls it out of its older, lower leaves to keep the new growth going — the oldest growth yellows first while the tips stay greener.
Before you feed, rule out the look-alikes:
- Iron deficiency yellows the new growth first, and often shows the leaf veins staying green (interveinal). Opposite pattern to nitrogen.Common on high-pH soil; it's a colour problem, not a growth problem — the lawn isn't necessarily thin.
- Drought is a grey-blue cast with footprints that stay pressed in, not a clean yellow.Water first; if it greens back up it was thirst, not hunger.
- Dog urine / fertiliser burn is sharp-edged patches, not a uniform fade.A spill or spot, not a lawn-wide signal.
- Fungal disease comes in rings, blotches, or spotted blades.Patterned, not uniform — a different playbook.
If you want it settled rather than guessed, a soil test (county extension or a mail-in kit) reads back N-P-K and pH and tells you exactly what's short — worth doing once to set a baseline.
Why this matters beyond colour: a hungry lawn is where Japanese clover wins — it's a legume, it makes its own nitrogen, so it thrives exactly where the grass is starved.
02Feed it — how much
Nitrogen is the first number on the bag. The target is grams of actual N, not pounds of product.
Fertiliser is labelled N-P-K — a 24-0-4 bag is 24% nitrogen by weight. The number that matters is actual nitrogen per 1,000 sq ft, and the standard single-feed target is about 1 lb of N per 1,000 sq ft. To turn that into how much bag to spread:
1 ÷ 0.46 ≈ 2.2 lb for the same 1 lb of N. Same nitrogen, less product — which is why you always calculate off the label, never eyeball it.
- Prefer slow-release nitrogen.Look for "slow-release," "polymer-coated," or a WIN (water-insoluble nitrogen) figure on the bag. It feeds over 6–8 weeks instead of a spike-and-fade, greens evenly, and is much harder to burn with. This is the default for a routine feed.
- Quick-release (urea, ammonium sulfate) for a fast rescue — but cap it.It greens up in days, but keep quick-release to about 0.5 lb N / 1,000 sq ft in one pass; more than that on a hungry, dry lawn risks a chemical burn.
- Organic (compost, composted manure, blood meal) to rebuild the soil.Slowest to show but it feeds the soil biology and organic matter that hold nitrogen in the first place — the long game against re-deficiency, especially on sandy ground.
- Water it in — about ¼ inch.A short irrigation after a granular feed moves the nitrogen off the blade and into the root zone, and is your main insurance against burn.
Spread a slow-release lawn fertiliser at label rate for ~1 lb N / 1,000 sq ft (or ~0.5 lb if it's quick-release), on dry blades, then water in ¼ inch. Colour starts to move within a week or two.
The label rate on your bag wins over any number here — brands differ, and "more" doesn't green faster, it burns. Don't feed a cool-season lawn hard in summer heat or when it's drought-stressed and dormant; wait for the recovery, or the fall feed below.
03Keep it fed — the cool-season year
Deficiency is a program problem. A lawn on a feed schedule doesn't go hungry.
For cool-season turf (fescue, rye, bluegrass), aim for roughly 2–4 lb of total nitrogen per 1,000 sq ft per year, split across a few feeds and weighted to autumn — fall is when cool-season grass banks energy into its roots, so it's the single most valuable feed of the year.
- Early springLight feed as it greens up (~0.5–1 lb N). Enough to thicken, not so much you force soft top-growth into summer stress.
- SummerEase off. Cool-season grass is surviving heat, not growing — heavy nitrogen now invites disease and burn. Skip, or use a light organic.
- Early fallThe main feed (~1 lb N). The recovery flush — this is the one that thickens the stand going into next year.
- Late fallWinteriser before dormancy (~1 lb N), while the grass is still green but growth has slowed. Fills the roots, greens up earliest next spring.
Two free habits that quietly cut the nitrogen bill: mulch the clippings back instead of bagging (they return a meaningful share of the nitrogen you cut off), and keep the mower high — 3.5–4″ — so a deeper, denser stand holds more nutrient and leaves weeds no gap.
04Why a fed lawn stays ahead
Feeding isn't cosmetic — it's the whole weed strategy.
Most lawn weeds are opportunists that win on thin, starved turf: clover and other legumes because they make their own nitrogen and don't need yours, crabgrass and annuals because bare, weak ground gives their seed the light and room to sprout. Fix the deficiency and you don't just get colour back — you close the door those weeds came through.
