2,4-D Amine Weed Killer
The classic, inexpensive selective broadleaf herbicide. The amine-salt formulation (vs. ester) is lower-volatility, so it's the safer choice when temperatures are warm and drift onto sensitive plants is a concern. Note this one carries the stronger DANGER signal word (primarily an eye-hazard flag for the concentrate).

01Usage
What it's for and where it goes.
- Targets: Broadleaf weeds — dandelion, plantain, clover, thistle, and many others. Does not kill grasses (selective), so it's used to clean up lawns, pastures, and turf.
- Where: Pastures, rangeland, lawns, golf courses, cemeteries, parks, fences, ditchbanks, roadsides, industrial sites.
- Rate: Your note reads ~1.33 fl oz/gal. Label rate varies by site and weed.
- Pairs with: MSO or a surfactant improves uptake on tougher/waxy weeds.

How well it actually works.
- Very effective and cheap on common lawn/pasture broadleaves.
- Amine salt = lower vapor drift than ester forms, but can still drift as spray droplets.
- Slower, growth-regulator kill (plants twist and distort over days), not a fast burn-down.
03Best at killing
What it's genuinely strongest on in real use.
- Common lawn and pasture broadleaves — 2,4-D is at its best on dandelion, plantain, clover, chickweed, and thistle, where university extension work and decades of practitioner use rate it cheap and dependable (PNW Handbooks, NPIC 2,4-D).
- Its ceiling is exactly there: it is a selective growth-regulator, so it will not touch grasses, and it is weaker on waxy or woody weeds than the ester or four-way products. Adding MSO lifts it on the tougher ones.
04Dangers
What it can hurt — read this before you reach for it.
- Signal word DANGER — the concentrate is a notable eye irritant/corrosive risk. Wear eye protection when handling.
- Off-target damage: Death to broadleaf ornamentals, vegetables, tomatoes, grapes, and trees if it contacts them or drifts. Keep well away from gardens and beds.
- Do not spray on windy days; keep away from water.
- Keep out of reach of children.

- Toxicity: moderate, and dogs are a standout — "Dogs may be more sensitive to 2,4-D than other animals" (NPIC 2,4-D General Fact Sheet). Ingestion signs in dogs/cats include "vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, lethargy, drooling, staggering, or convulsions."
- Main exposure route: a dog walking wet grass then grooming its paws/fur, or eating treated grass (NPIC).
- When safe again: NPIC says to "stay away from grass or plants that have been treated until the leaves are dry." Keep dogs off until fully dry; a 2019 dog-urine study (Knapp et al., Sci Total Environ) found phenoxy residues linger longer on dry/brown turf, so 24–48h and after a rain or irrigation is the cautious default.
General guidance. Confirm the label's re-entry interval and ask your vet; when unsure keep dogs off until fully dry.

How to keep it, and keep it separate.
- Store in original container, tightly closed, cool/dry, away from children, food, and feed.
- Keep separate enough that the DANGER concentrate isn't grabbed by mistake.
- Stable for years sealed.
